Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh High Court has convicted 43 policemen in a 31-year-old fake encounter case in Pilibhit. The court has sentenced 43 policemen involved in the fake encounter to 7-7 years in jail. A double bench of Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Saroj Yadav of the High Court sentenced the policemen in the Pilibhit encounter case.

On July 12, 1991, 11 Sikh youths were taken out from a bus carrying pilgrims near Kachla Ghat in Pilibhit, and 10 people were killed in an encounter with the police, while Talwinder Singh of Shahjahanpur is still missing. Ten Sikh pilgrims were killed in Pilibhit's Puranpur Nuria and Bilsanda police station areas as terrorists of the Khalistan Liberation Front. The CBI investigation into the case began on May 15, 1992, on the orders of the Supreme Court. All 57 policemen were sentenced to life imprisonment after hearing the CBI chargesheet. The accused policemen were sentenced in April 2016.

After getting the sentence from the trial court, the accused appealed to the Lucknow bench of the high court. After the hearing, the Lucknow bench of the High Court also convicted the 43 surviving policemen for the encounter and sentenced them to 7-7 years in jail. A fine of Rs 10,000 each has also been imposed on them.
