BANGALORE: The Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by Kumaraswamy in Karnataka collapsed on Tuesday after failing to win a confidence vote in the Assembly. At the same time, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who has been facing a 14-month period of instability in the state, has ended his tenure. Kumaraswamy had 99 votes in favor and 105 against. Kumaraswamy then submitted his resignation to Governor Vajubhai Wala in the night.

Officials said, soon after the result, Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parmeshwar  Along with other senior colleagues went to Raj Bhavan and handed over the resignation. "With my cabinet, I am resigning as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and I urge you to accept it," the resignation said. "I am grateful for the cooperation I and my colleagues have received during my tenure on this occasion," the resignation said. On the other hand, Leader of Opposition and BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa has expressed confidence to form the government, terming it as a victory for the truth. Meanwhile, the BJP legislative party met late last night at a hotel under the chairmanship of Yeddyurappa.

There is a meeting again on Wednesday. Yeddyurappa has written a letter to BJP President Amit Shah thanking him for his support.  The government was in trouble after the resignation of 14 rebel Congress-JD(S) MLAs. However, one of the Congress MLAs has voted in support of the government. Two independent MLAs H Nagesh and R Ramesh had also resigned as ministers withdrawing support from the government. Both the MLAs had shifted to the BJP camp.
