Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday raided various places in West Bengal in connection with the alleged coal scam. In the afternoon, raids were going on in South Kolkata, Asansol and surrounding areas in connection with the coal scam and cattle smuggling cases.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also raided several locations of a businessman from Kolkata, West Bengal in connection with the coal scam. According to media reports, "Many bureaucrats and politicians allegedly received bribes through this businessman". The raid came a few days after the Central Bureau of Investigation questioned Rujira Banerjee, wife of Abhishek Banerjee, TMC leader and nephew of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, about the coal scam. In the eastern state, raids before the assembly elections are very important.
The political significance of this investigation can be gauged from the fact that CM Banerjee was spotted at the residence of Rujira Banerjee just before the CBI inquiry earlier this week. According to media reports, businessman Randhir Kumar Barnwal's residential complex was raided in Kolkata. While the Enforcement Directorate is investigating the economic matters of the case, the CBI is investigating the criminal case in the case. The agency said that the CBI has issued a lookout notice against the alleged kingpin Anoop Majhi alias Lala, who is still absconding.
