Ranchi: The Jain society is demonstrating across the country against the decision to make Sammed Shikharji, the holy pilgrimage site of the Jain community, a tourist destination. Meanwhile, the Union Environment Ministry has written a letter to the Jharkhand government asking it to consider the objection raised by the Jain community.

The same letter was written by Director General of Forests CP Goyal to Jharkhand Chief Secretary Sukhdev Singh on Friday. In the letter, he said that the ministry has been receiving several representations from the Jain community and other individuals. It states that the Parasnath Sanctuary is the sanctum sanctorum of Jain spirituality. Therefore, the order of activities like eco-tourism there has hurt their sentiments. In the letter, the Ministry has been asked to reconsider such activities around Parasnath Sanctuary. The Ministry has sent a copy of the representation to the Government of Jharkhand.

In fact, Sammed Shikharji situated on the Parasnath hills in Giridih district of Jharkhand is the biggest pilgrimage of the Jain community. The community members are opposing the state government's move to promote religious tourism in Parasnath Hills. The root cause of the countrywide protests regarding Sammed Shikharji is a notice recently issued by the Central and Jharkhand governments. In the notice issued by the Central and Jharkhand governments, it has been said to make Sammed Shikharji a tourist destination. The people of Jain society have opened a front against the notice issued by the governments, terming it as an outrage on their religious sentiments.
