The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) said on Sunday that its ESI health insurance scheme will be implemented nationwide by the end of 2022.

Currently, 443 districts have fully implemented the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Scheme, whereas 153 districts have only partially implemented it. The ESI Scheme does not cover a total of 148 districts.

The ESIC, chaired by Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav, took key decisions during its 188th meeting on Sunday to improve medical care and service delivery across the country, according to a labour ministry release.

“The ESI Scheme would be implemented across the country by the end of 2022”, reads the statement. The districts that are partially covered and not covered under the scheme would be fully brought under the ESI Scheme by the end of the year,  the statement said.

Medical care would be supplied through the establishment of new DCBOs (dispensary cum branch offices), the appointment of mIMPs (Modified Insurance Medical Practitioners), and Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) tie-up hospitals.
