Addis Ababa: Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, has announced the start of a two-day weapon registration drive. "Beginning today (Tuesday), any resident of Addis Ababa must register any weapons he or she has in his or her possession with the nearest police station in a two-day period, regardless of whether the weapon has been registered in the past or not," said Chief of Addis Ababa city Peace and Security Administration Bureau Kenea Yadeta, according to reports.

"In coordination with the security forces, all residents must be organised in blocks and neighbourhoods to protect their home area's peace and security," Yadeta was quoted as saying by Ethiopia News Agency. The security chief in Addis Ababa also announced that random security checks will be conducted throughout Ethiopia's capital, and warned people to stop spreading false information on social media platforms. "Entities that work to create gaps and suspicions between the government and the people will face irreversible measures," Yadeta said.

The increased security measures in Ethiopia's capital come amid reports of escalating clashes in northern Ethiopia between federal government forces and forces aligned with the Tigray People's Liberation Army (TPLF).
