Brussels: The US approval of allowing Ukrainian pilots to receive training to fly F-16s has generated an irresistible momentum, according to the head of foreign policy for the European Union, which will inevitably result in the fighter jets showing up on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Josep Borrell said, "You know, it's always the same thing: we talk, and at first, everyone is reluctant." He used the protracted discussion and initial resistance to the shipment of cutting-edge Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine as an example.

And in the end, with the Leopards and the F-16, it is decided to offer this military support because it is unavoidably required. According to Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of NATO, the decision to allow training was precisely what Ukraine needed to receive the jets.

Before meeting with EU defence ministers, Stoltenberg said, "Announcing clearly that they will start training — this is an important step that partly will enable us to deliver fighter jets at some point." According to him, this decision "is sending a very clear signal that we are there for the long term and that Russia can not wait us out." He added that it also demonstrated that the West would not back down in the face of Russia.

Borrell added that training for Ukrainian pilots had already started in Poland and other nations, though Warsaw authorities were unable to confirm the information right away. Plans for this kind of training are also being made in countries like the Netherlands and Denmark.

Fourth-generation fighter jet delivery has not yet been officially decided, but training pilots now, a process that takes several months, will hasten battle readiness once a formal decision has been made.

"We can continue and complete the preparations we're making with allies like Denmark to begin these trainings. The first step is obviously to take that, according to Dutch Minister of Defence Kajsa Ollongren.

"We will keep talking about that next step with our allies and nations that might have F-16s available. However, that is not an option at this time, according to Ollongren.

Ukraine has long pleaded for the advanced fighter to give it a competitive edge as it fights Russia's invasion, which has been going on for two years. Additionally, this new strategy makes it possible for several countries to supply the aircraft and for the US to assist in pilot training.

After for more than a year refusing to approve any transfer of the aircraft or conduct training due to concerns that it might worsen relations with Russia, the Biden administration has now abruptly reversed course with the decision. US officials have also argued against the F-16 by claiming that it would be challenging and take months to learn to fly and logistically support such a sophisticated aircraft.
