BRUSSELS: The European Union is considering a military training programme for Ukrainian soldiers, the bloc's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.

It is reasonable for European Union (EU) support to Ukraine to involve "endeavours not only in terms of material supplies, but also in training, and help in organising the armed forces", Borrell said.

During the early stages of the Russian invasion six months ago, discussions about military assistance included the possibility of training Ukrainian forces.

Borrell said that the proposal will now be discussed by EU defence ministers during a casual gathering the following week in Prague, but he did not disclose any other information.

Since Russia invaded the nation on February 24, the EU has given Ukraine 2.5 billion euros (USD 2.5 billion) in military aid for supplies like weapons, fuel, and equipment.The European Peace Facility (EPF), a vehicle separate from the EU budget, provides the funding.

EU treaties forbid the bloc from allocating cash from the EU budget to military projects. The European Peace Facility enables the EU to bolster the armed forces of allies while also compensating member states that give military aid.  On a bilateral level and outside of the EU, EU members have also sent Ukraine weapons.
