Greece: A holistic, cohesive, and fair European strategy to migration is the only way ahead,. Member states must agree on a "Migration and Asylum" deal, said  a top European Union (EU) official.

"Today, Greece manages migration with a clear plan and demonstrable outcomes, and it is a leader in crafting a unified European policy... Margaritis Schinas, vice president of the European Commission, stated that "the problems we face remain considerable."

Greece, as one of the countries in the forefront of the recent refugee and migrant crisis, has urged for more equitable burden-sharing among EU member states.

According to migration authorities, more than a million people have entered the country since 2015, mostly via Turkey, fleeing war zones and terrible poverty. Most continued their journey to other European nations until the Balkan route to Central Europe's borders were closed in the winter of 2016.

The situation has improved since an agreement between the EU and Turkey in March 2016 aimed at stemming the inflow. Thousands of newcomers arrive each year in Greece, and hundreds of lives are lost in the Aegean Sea.
