BRUSSELS: The European Union (EU) will work to reduce its reliance on Russia for energy, according to the President of the European Commission.

“The European Union is looking into ways to reduce its reliance on Russian gas, oil, and coal” said the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. To that end, the European Union will accelerate its Green Deal, a roadmap for making the EU's economy more sustainable, according to report.  She stated that the EU will work to improve its energy efficiency.

Concerning the protection of consumers from price increases caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, von der Leyen stated that the EU will need to reconsider its energy market composition in the long run, especially since renewables are expected to account for a larger share in the future.
