The European Union and Ukraine signed an open-skies agreement that will establish a joint aviation space, the Ukrainian presidential press service said.  The agreement which was signed on Tuesday, focussed at the twenty-third Ukraine-EU Summit in Kiev, will open up the air markets of Ukraine and the European Union and bolster air safety, air traffic, and environmental protection, the presidential press service said in a statement, according to media report

The open-skies agreement must be ratified by Ukraine and each European Union member state to take effect.  The signing ceremony was attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

On June 28, 2021, the European Union Council agreed to sign Common Aviation Area (CAP) agreements with Ukraine, Armenia, Tunisia, and Qatar. Negotiations on the Comprehensive Assistance Package with Ukraine were completed in 2013, but the signing of the deal had been blocked due to a conflict between the UK and Spain over the status of Gibraltar airport.
