Srinagar: Omar Abdullah, vice president and former CM of the National Conference (NC) in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, said on Friday that "it is the right of every citizen in a democracy to criticize those in positions of power and "thin-skinned leaders" should stop hiding behind old laws". In fact, Abdullah made the remarks after a sedition case was registered against Aisha Sultana a local resident of Lakshadweep and a film activist.

Omar Abdullah tweeted from his official Twitter handle that 'Criticism of Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel does not mean treason (Sedition). In a democracy, we still want to claim that it is the right of every citizen to criticize those in positions of power. These thin-skinned 'leaders' should stop hiding behind such old laws.'

In fact, Aisha has been at the forefront of the ongoing campaigns against reforms and changes being made in Lakshadweep. Police on Thursday registered a sedition case against filmmaker and activist Aisha Sultana on a complaint by state BJP president Abdul Khadar. Aisha has been booked under sections 124 A (sedition) and 153 B (hate speech). He is alleged to have described Praful Patel as a "biological weapon" being used by the central government on the people of the island.'
