EVM Malfunctioning Affects Voting in Several places in UP at first phase of LS Poll

In the first two hours of voting, 9 percent voter turnout recorded in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana. Voting was halted for some time at several booths in Hapur, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh due to EVM malfunctioning. Voter turnout till 9 am at eight constituencies in Uttar Pradesh: Saharanpur- 8%, Kairana-10%, Muzaffarnagar-10%, Meerut- 10%, Bijnor - 11%, Baghpat - 11%, Ghaziabad - 12% and Gautam Budh Nagar-12%

The most important province in the world’s largest democracy, in perhaps what will be the biggest election ever, as many as 150 million people will cast their votes in Uttar Pradesh April 11. For context, this electorate is bigger than the population of Russia and Mexico, the ninth and tenth most populous countries respectively.  And this is just one of the seven phases in which polling will be done in different constituencies of the state.

It was from UP’s Meerut, a constituency which also casts its votes in the first phase on April 11, that the first rebellion against British broke out in 1857. In 2019, yet another rebellion agains the incumbent government has manifested itself as an alliance of former rivals BSP and SP have garrisoned their troops to take on the mighty BJP in the cow belt heartland.  

UP sends 80 MPs to the lower house of the parliament – a reason why it’s said that the road to Delhi goes through Lucknow.  The state which gave India eight out of its 14 Prime Ministers will caste votes in Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar parliamentary constituencies in the first phase. As many as 96 candidates are contesting from these 8 seats. The main political parties in the fray are the BJP, Congress and the SP-BSP- RLD alliance. During the first phase of the Lok Sabha election on April 11, voting will be conducted in 16,518 polling centres.
