Exam stress, peer pressure or depression - What's the reason behind teenager's suicide?

A spate of student suicides over pressure to perform has rocked world over the last few days, with the ongoing board examinations. When board exams approach, the children crumble under family and parental pressure and the ever-increasing level of competition. The number of students are growing who commits suicide over examinations.

Students are continously worried about the reactions and potentially negative consequences of asserting themselves at school and in their homes. The pressures of being a teen today and the epidemic of recent teen suicides in the local area.

A 18-yr- old Indian boy committed suicide after failing in his class 12 exams held by CBSE, described as an intelligent student, just could not come to terms with the fact that he failed in mathematics and tooks his own life in the city of lucknow.

As an athlete representing her school at the state level, 15-year-old Raje Sabi, a Class x student in a Chennai school. She was just an average student. With board examinations round the corner, Sabi was not allowed outdoors or to watch TV. But the pressure was too much for her to handle. When her parents went to church, she commited suicide due to pressure, Sabi hanged herself from the living room fan.

On Mar 05, Class 12 student commited suicide, a day before his board exam and left letter for his parents written- “Sorry, mummy-papa, I cannot do physics. I don’t want to fail in the examination” .

In Delhi, a survey of students in 150 schools by VIMHANS, a leading mental health institute, reported that close to 40 per cent of the students felt overwhelmed by the examination phenomena and wanted guidance.

Students committing suicides are not uncommon. But what has everyone worried is not just the rising numbers taking the extreme step of ending their lives. Psychiatrists are reporting that a large number of students were suffering from traumatic disorders related to the fear of examinations. "In the past 10 years, the pressure on students has increased by 50 per cent", according to survey.

We must make exams in such a way that it does not bank on memory but emphasises thinking capability and understanding.

Are we teaching the youth of today the race to never being happy and at peace with who they are, as they are? Parents needs to support their children at every point, an average student can be a good player, fashion designer and so need.

Parents and other family members should motivate their children to opt for the career, they are passionate for.
