Chennai: The Kannur-Yeshwanthapur Express train (Train no. 07390) derailed in the early hours of Friday in Dharmapuri, near Salem, Tamil Nadu, when rocks fell on it. The event resulted in no casualties, according to a statement from the South Western Railway. The train carrying 2,350 passengers and five coaches derailed between Thoppur and Sivadi (Ghat section) about 3.50 a.m. on Friday, according to the statement. The train, which departed Kannur, Kerala, at 6.05 p.m. on Thursday, was on its way to Yeshwanthapur, Bengaluru, when it collided.
The derailment of coaches BI, B2(AC Three-tier), S6, S7, S8, S9, and S1O sleeper coaches was caused by the abrupt collapse of rocks, according to SouthWestern Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer Aneesh Hegde. According to Hegde, the unaffected coaches and passengers resumed their journey to Thoppur and then on to Salem. Passengers wishing to travel to Bengaluru were provided with fifteen buses.
Senior railway officials arrived from Bengaluru and Salem with the Accident Relief Train (ART) and a medical equipment truck. According to a statement from the South Western Railway, three train services have been diverted due to the mishap.
