Railways create history during Corona period, express delivered 20,000 Metric Tonnes of oxygen

New Delhi: The second wave of the deadly corona virus in India wreaked havoc which ultimately caused oxygen shortages in hospitals. There was an uproar in the country and patients started dying due to lack of oxygen in hospitals and outside hospitals. In the meantime, railways provided oxygen to the states through oxygen express trains.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal today said that oxygen express trains have crossed the milestone of delivering 20,000 metric tonnes of oxygen to corona patients. Piyush Goyal tweeted, "Oxygen Express trains have crossed the milestone of providing 20,000 metric tonnes of oxygen to corona patients in India." Goyal said, ''So far 300 Oxygen Express trains have completed their journey in the service of the nation.''

Railways have so far delivered oxygen through more than 1162 tankers in 39 cities in about 15 states. Oxygen Express trains started supplying on April 24 and 126 tonnes of oxygen was sent to Maharashtra. The southern states include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana, where one thousand tonnes of liquid medical oxygen each was supplied by the Railways to each state. The 15 states where these trains reached include Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Telangana, Punjab, Kerala, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Assam.
