New Delhi: Facebook has refused to discontinue such advertisements on its platform, citing political advertisements as essential for the voice of candidates and lobbying groups. Addressing investors, Facebook's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg said, "I don't think it is right for private companies to ban leaders or news in a democracy."

He has said that we have also considered before that whether we should run such advertisements or not and we will continue to churn on this in future. However, as of now, we have decided to continue it. Referring to Google, YouTube, cable networks and television channels, he said that they all run such advertisements on their platforms.

Zuckerberg further stated that the company has not decided to continue these advertisements because of revenue. This decision has been taken because these advertisements are the important voice of the candidates and lobbying groups. He has said that political advertisements will contribute less than 0.50 percent to the company's revenue next year. Let me tell you that Twitter has banned political advertisements on its platform.
