Devi Ahilyabai Holkar was A most powerful ruler of the Holkar Dynesty. She ruled the Malwa region of central India. Due to her pious nature and courageous personality she was known as saintly ruler of Indore. On the occasion of her death anniversary, we bring you the important information about this great ruler.
She was born in 1725 in the village of Chondi in Maharashtra to Makoji Sindhe. She married to Khanderao Holker but he was killed in the battle of Kumbher in 1754, leaving her a widow at only 21.
After the death of husband, Ahilyabai was about to commit Sati but her father-in-law Malhar Rao refused to let it happen. Her son Male Rao Holkar was crowned as the ruler of Indore after the death of Malhar Rao
Unfortunately, her son also died and after his death, she decided to take charge of her Kingdom. After becoming ruler, she shifted capital from Indore to Maheshwar, where she built Ahilya Fort
She used to love and respect the art, literature, music, sculpture and poetry. She was a kind soul and loves to do charity. Most of the developments and charity were done by her personal fund. She built and reconstructed many forts, Ghats and temples in different parts of India. Somnath temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and vishnupad Temple in Gaya are some of the examples of her work.
