Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as 'iron man', died on this day. He was the first Home Minister of India. Due to giving a new direction to the Indian national movement in ideological and functional form, Sardar Patel has acquired a very proud place in political history. By the way, let us also tell you that Sardar Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was the fourth child of Jhaver Bhai and Ladba Patel living in Karmsad in Kheda district. In 1897, at the age of 22, he passed the matriculation examination and was married to Jhabarba. His wife died when he was 33 years old.
It is said that Sardar Patel could not bear injustice. He always opposed injustice. He led the Bardoli Satyagraha and upon the success of this Satyagraha, the women there gave him the title of 'Sardar'. It is said that Sardar Patel was a staunch opponent of apartheid and class discrimination. He was also greatly influenced by the success of Gandhiji's Champaran Satyagraha. In 1918, when there was a drought in the Kheda section of Gujarat, the farmers demanded relief from taxes, but the British government did not agree. During that time Gandhiji raised the issue of farmers, but he could not devote all his time to Kheda, so he was looking for a person who could lead this struggle in his absence.
During that time he met Sardar Patel who voluntarily led this struggle. Although Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel would have been the first Prime Minister of the country he stepped back from this position, respecting the will of Mahatma Gandhi and Nehruji became the first Prime Minister of the country. During that time, after the independence of the country, Sardar Patel became the first Home, Information and Principal Minister with the Deputy Prime Minister. He was awarded India's highest national honour Bharat Ratna in the year 1991 and the award was accepted by his grandson Vipinbhai Patel. He never had a house of his own, but he lived in a rented house in Ahmedabad. It is said that when he died in Mumbai on 15 December 1950, there were only 260 rupees in his bank account. Today he salutes him on his death anniversary.
