Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday gave a statement on the criminals associated with the Bilkis Bano case. He said that if criminals have been honoured, it is not right and there can be no explanation for such acts. Devendra Fadnavis said that 11 criminals in the Bilkis Bano rape case in 2022 were released by the Gujarat government on the basis of an amnesty policy after a Supreme Court order recently. But it is not right to honour those involved in crime.
The Deputy Chief Minister said this during a discussion in the Legislative Council. There was a discussion on the alleged sexual assault of a 35-year-old woman by three men in the Bhandara district. Fadnavis said the issue of Bilkis Bano should not be raised in the House. Fadnavis said "The criminals have been released after almost 20 years, after spending 14 years in jail. The release followed a Supreme Court order. But if a criminal is honoured and welcomed, it is wrong. A criminal is a criminal and this act cannot be justified.''
Eleven convicts serving life sentences for the Bilkis Bano gang rape and murder of seven members of her family were released on August 15. The BJP government in Gujarat had released him before the completion of their sentence under the amnesty policy. After their release from Godhra jail, the criminals were welcomed with garlands and sweets.
