GURUGRAM: A fake call centre was busted here the intervening night of Thursday and Friday , and 18 persons were detained for allegedly defrauding overseas nationals under the pretext of text help.

The accused allegedly used to put the victims under false pressure by raising concerns about child pornography and the potential that their bank account information might have been stolen. They then used to sell antiviral software for 200 to 900 bucks.

The perpetrators allegedly used Google Pay, Epay, Steam, Apple, Bestbuy, and Target Gift Cards to make purchases. The fake contact centre had been paying a rent of Rs 2.5 lakh per month for the previous few months.

The call centre, which was located on the third floor of Lal Tower in Udyog Vihar, was raided by a police team from the Chief Minister's flying wing, Cyber Crime police station (west), and Udyog Vihar police station as a result of a tip-off, according to the police.

18 persons were detained during the raid, including the manager and the owner, and three mobile phones, three laptops, an Internet modem, a lane container, and Rs 13,480 were taken. Shashank Rathod, the call center's owner, Abhishek Pandey, a citizen of Ahmedabad (Gujarat), and Vivek Shinde, the manager of the contact centre, were named as the main defendants. Rathod is 32 years old.
