Fake call centre busts, 13 arrested for duping US residents

The Goa Police Department busted an illegal call centre operating from out Morjim, a beach village in North Goa, whose employees pretended to be US government agents and threatened US citizens with their social security numbers, before "settling" the matter by paying fines that were then converted into Bitcoins.

The Crime Branch of the Goa Police said in an official statement that 13 people from Mumbai and Gujarat had been charged in connection with the scam. According to the statement, "it was found that the evidence analysis and preliminary interrogation that they were defrauding American nationals by impersonating US government agents and telling them that their Social Security Numbers (SSN) were going to be blocked because they were found in a criminal investigation."

"The victims were then forced into paying penalties in the form of cash vouchers, which were subsequently converted to Bitcoin and utilized by the scammers," the report continued. The raid was carried out by state police personnel from the Crime Branch and the Cyber Cell at the Eden Hotel in Morjim beach resort, where the call centre was based.

"Upon raid, 13 persons including the mastermind were apprehended and seizure of electronic devices including 12 computers and laptops was made," the statement also said
