Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passed away on Sunday, November 21. She had been ill for a long time. Gurmeet Bawa was admitted to a hospital in Amritsar on Saturday night after her health deteriorated. Gurmeet, 77, breathed her last at the hospital. Her last rites will be performed on Monday.
The death of Gurmeet Bawa has sent shock waves through the music world. Gurmeet Bawa had a record of 45 seconds of hack in Punjabi folk singing. Gurmeet had won many national and international honours in her career. She was one of the singers with the 'Jugni' song. Gurmeet Bawa was also the first Punjabi woman singer to sing songs on Doordarshan.
Gurmeet Bawa was married to Punjabi folk singer Kirpal Bawa. Both have three daughters. She was awarded the Central Award by the Government of Punjab in 1991. In addition, she was awarded the Music Award from Punjab Natak Akademi, The National Devi Ahilya Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the Shiromani Singer Award from the Punjabi Language Department. Gurmeet Bawa's passing is a big loss to the music space.
