Belgaum (Karnataka) [India], Dec. 27 (NT): Demanding execution of the Kalasa-Banduri project, farmer groups on Wednesday called for a Bandh in north Karnataka.

Staging protest in opposition to the government failing to resolve the dispute, protestors came to roads and shouted anti-government slogans.

With the bundle of Agitation, they also burnt effigies.

Public transport and commercial enterprise are also closed between Karnataka and Goa following the ongoing protest.

Security has been knocked up to continue Law and Order in the state.

The shutdown called by Mahadayi Kalasa Banduri Nala Horata Samanvaya Samiti, an umbrella organization forefront the protest, is being shored up by a number of pro-Kannada and other organizations.

The bandh called in different places like Gadag, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Hubballi, Bailahongala and neighboring areas.

The state of Karnataka and Goa are at loggerheads on the subject of distribution of inter-state Mahadayi river water. As the river originates from Karnataka, a major part of it flows in Goa.

Before this, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddarmaiah has urged for a conference with his Maharashtra and Goa counterparts Devendra Fadnavis and Manohar Parrikar respectively "to turn up at a negotiated settlement" over the subject.

The Karnataka has wanted the release of 7.56 tmcft water for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala project. (NT)
