Today i.e. on October 21, Farooq Abdullah is celebrating his birthday. But Sheikh Abdullah would never have thought that his son Farooq would one day be arrested under the same Public Safety Act (PSA). Which he enacted as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 1978 to deal with timber smugglers in the state.

For your information, let us tell you that in 1990 when the then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed implemented the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the state, PSA was used extensively at that time. On Monday, however, the administration used the same four-decade-old act against Dr. Farooq Abdullah, a three-time Chief Minister and five-time MP.

If you do not know then action taken under PSA can be reviewed from time to time and it can also be challenged in the High Court. The act was amended in 2012 and relaxed some of its stringent provisions. After the amendment, the period of detention of the offender or person was reduced from two years to six months for the first time without any trial. However, there is a provision that imprisonment can be extended up to two years if necessary.
