Father's Day is celebrated every year on June 20. This day is considered dedicated to the father's love, sacrifice and respect. Father's Day is now being celebrated today. Although it is celebrated on different days in different countries, Father's Day is being celebrated in India on June 20, as India celebrates American dates. Let us tell you that Father's Day was the first to start with the United States. It is said that the first Father's Day was celebrated on July 5, 1908 in West Virginia, USA. The day was observed to honour the fathers who lost their lives in a mining accident in the US.

According to some reports, Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington, is credited with the concept of Father's Day. It is said that Sonora Dodd was inspired by Mother's Day in 1909. Then, in 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd presented the idea of Father's Day to the world. In fact, Sonora Smart Dodd was the daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart and started celebrating Father's Day in memory of his father. Sonora was deeply impressed by the prayer in a church. Sonora is said to have learnt how Anna Jarvis had decided to celebrate Mother's Day in honour of her mother. After that, she wondered why she could not take the initiative to celebrate Father's Day. After all this, Sonora requested the Spokane Ministerial Alliance to celebrate Father's Day in honour of her father on June 5.

In fact, It was Sonora's father's birthday on June 5. Sonora's father was a single parent who raised his 6 children alone. Because of this, Sonora wanted tribute to her father's dedication and sacrifice. After a lot of effort, the first Father's Day was finally celebrated on June 19, 1910 at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington. Then, in 1916, former US President Woodrow Wilson approved the celebration of the day. Former President Calvin Coolidge declared Father's Day a national event in 1924. Finally, former US President Lyndon B. Johnson officially announced in 1966 that the third Sunday of June would be celebrated as Father's Day.
