New Delhi: Social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp remained down for several hours since 9 pm on Monday (October 4, 2021). Mark Zuckerberg suffered a loss of $600 million (Rs 44,757 crores) CEO of the technical glitch in the Facebook server. But, Congress leaders in India spread rumours that PM Narendra Modi shut down all the three social media platforms to suppress the farmers' movement.

Congress party national spokesperson Udit Raj wrote on Twitter, "It seems that Narendra Modi's government deliberately shut down Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to suppress Priyanka Gandhi, opposition leaders and the farmers' movement.'' While Congress party national coordinator Radhika Khera went a step further, she claimed, "The timid Modi government shut down WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram from the evening. The rest, the dock media is under control. Nothing will work, no people will know the news! RIP democracy!''

Similarly, Tamil Nadu Youth Congress President JMM Hasan Maulana wrote in his tweet, "Dear Narendra Modiji, you cannot stop the propaganda of social media. That is why you have done it. Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram seized operations.'' However, Twitter users explained to all these Congress leaders that these services are closed all over the world due to technical snags, not only in India. But still, Congress leaders continued to spread false propaganda.

The problem started around 9.15 pm on Monday. People then immediately started reacting on Twitter. The impact was also seen on Facebook shares in the US market and the company's shares fell by 6 per cent. Facebook had the biggest ever slowdown in 2019. Even at that time, the company had reported only that there was some disturbance during the routine maintenance operation.
