Moscow [Russia], June 22 (NT): Captain Lionel Messi's dream of winning the FIFA World Cup 2018 now looks far-off as Argentina marked a 3-0 defeat to Croatia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

In a major setback for Argentina side his goalkeeper Willy Caballero in the 53rd minute gave Ante Rebic a winning chance which was hard to reject, as per goal.com reported.

Rebic sent a volley through Caballero's silhouette to begin the scoring.

Real Madrid's Modric bowed a surprise strike around a diving Caballero in the 80th minute ahead of Messi's Barcelona team-mate Rakitic finished the scoring after Croatia sliced apart Argentina's ill fated defense in injury time.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic sealed a deserved win for Croatia through second-half goals from Rebic.

Croatia has made space for itself into the last 16 meetings of the football World Cup.

On a related note Croatia has marked two wins against Nigeria and now La Albiceleste, Argentina.

In order to save itself from humiliation, as per the Group D defeat, Argentina will most likely have to thrash Nigeria in their last game to keep away from elimination.

Speaking about the match, Argentina Manager Jorge Sampaoli stated the team couldn't transform the course of events. He added that our side was emotionally broken and didn't have any football arguments to make to change the course of events.
