NEW DELHI: In a bid to combat pollution more effectively, the Delhi government is aiming to plant 35 lakh plants in the national capital in 2022, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Saturday.

To further increase Delhi's green cover, we are implementing a number of strategies. This year, Rai stated, we hope to plant 35 lakh plants in Delhi through various agencies.

The Delhi government would also start a 15-day plantation push called "Van Mahotsav" on July 11 in the city, the minister said.

The government of Delhi has been making constant efforts to improve the city's ecology. The actions we have taken to address pollution have served as a model for the entire nation, said the minister. He also stated that customers would be given the phone numbers for 14 nurseries located throughout Delhi.

As part of the Delhi government's initiative to plant more trees, Rai remarked at an event where he gave free medicinal saplings, "Delhi has extended its green belt up to 32 percent and we hope to increase it further." He claimed that the Delhi cabinet had also resolved to support urban farming so that residents could grow their own vegetables in their residences.
