Fiji: Minister for Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar stated on Thursday that violence against women and girls is rampant in both public and private areas in Fiji. She stated that in Fiji, two out of every three women had been victims of domestic abuse perpetrated by their intimate partners. In the workplace, one out of every five women is subjected to sexual harassment.

According to estimates, roughly one in three girls in the South Pacific island country are physically or sexually abused after the age of 15 when addressing at a high-level media conference and presenting a National Action Plan to reduce violence against women and girls.

According to the Minister, nearly two out of every ten girls in Fiji experience sexual abuse before they become 15 years old, according to a study conducted by the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre. She went on to say that she, too, was a victim of domestic abuse as a kid, and she asked Fijians to speak out about it in order to help reduce violence against women and children. She emphasised that global research shows that violence against women and girls may be prevented if a population-wide, evidence-based strategy is used.  According to Akbar, the National Action Plan will serve as a blueprint for Fiji to effectively end violence against all women and girls.
