LUCKNOW: A new case has been filed against director Ram Gopal Varma for his contentious tweet against Draupadi Murmu, the NDA's presidential nominee. The FIR was filed at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow in response to a complaint made by Manoj Singh, a social worker.

Earlier, a complaint was filed in Telangana against Varma because of the divisive tweet.

Singh said in his complaint that "Varma had tweeted from his official Twitter account: "If Draupadi is the President, who are the Pandavas?". Also, who are the Kauravas, and why is that important? The tweet is an intentional attempt to poison the atmosphere, which can result in undesirable events." The complainant stated that the tweet was "humiliating for a woman" and that it also offended religious emotions because it painted figures from the Mahabharata in a negative manner.

A case had been filed, said Raghvendra Mishra, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Central zone.

The director later tweeted: "This was meant only in an earnest irony and not intended in any other manner." after receiving backlash for his initial statement. Although Draupadi from the Mahabharata is one of my favourite characters, I only remembered the characters who were associated with the name because it is so uncommon. Not at all my intention to offend anyone's feelings.
