Finance Minister meets financial sector regulators, discusses economic situation and budget proposals

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reviewed the state of the economy at a meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on Wednesday. Suggestions and proposals related to the budget were also discussed at the meeting. Several financial sector regulators, including Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, attended the meeting.

Finance Minister Sitharaman will present the first general budget for the second term of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha on July 5. The budget is expected to focus on measures to accelerate the pace of the economy, as the country's economic growth slowed to 6.8 per cent in 2018-19, the lowest level in five years. According to an official release, the meeting was attended by Ajay Tyagi, Chairman of securities and exchange board of India (SEBI), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) chief Subhash Chandra Khuntia and several high officials of the Finance Ministry.

The FSDC is the apex body of financial sector regulators led by the Finance Minister. Addressing the press after the meeting, Das said, "The FSDC meeting reviewed the current state of the economy, overall macro-economic conditions and global growth. Also, suggestions and proposals related to the upcoming Budget were discussed," he said.
