The government has made a big announcement giving relief to the television industry. The central government has decided to remove the customs duty of five percent on the import of open cell TV panels.

These panels are used to make LED and LCD TVs. The TV industry, while welcoming the government's decision, said that it would encourage the production of television at the domestic level. The Finance Ministry said that there will be no charge on open cell TV panels (15.6 inches and above) used in manufacturing LCD and LED TVs. The government has also removed customs duty on imports of a chip on film, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and cell (glass board/substrate).

These accessories are used in making open cell TV panels. The government imposed a customs duty of five percent on panel imports on 30 June 2017. The Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association, including several TV manufacturing companies, had opposed the move and demanded its removal. The government has taken the decision in view of the upcoming festival season.
