Finance Ministry Permits Name-Gender Change for Senior IRS Officer

NEW DELHI: For the first time in the history of Indian civil service, the Finance Ministry has granted approval for a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer to change her name and gender in all official records. IRS officer M Anasuya was given permission to change her name to M Anukathir Surya. And the central government has also given permission to change the name of female to male. Anukathir is a 2016 batch IRS officer. Presently serving as Joint Commissioner in Hyderabad. 

On July 9, 2024, an official notification from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, authorized by the competent authority, confirmed the following changes. Surya began his career as an assistant commissioner in Chennai and was subsequently promoted to Deputy Commissioner in 2018.

His educational qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication from the Madras Institute of Technology and a PG Diploma in Cyber Law and Cyber Forensics from the National Law Institute University in Bhopal. According to his LinkedIn profile, he assumed his current position in Hyderabad in the previous year.

This marks a significant milestone, showcasing strides towards recognizing and embracing gender identity within the Indian Civil Services. The finance ministry's approval sets a precedent for inclusivity and support for transgender individuals in government roles," stated a senior IRS officer from the ministry.

Officers believe this decision could catalyze inclusive policies across diverse sectors in India. "This is a groundbreaking directive; we take pride in our officer and our ministry," added another senior IRS officer from the income tax department.
