World Soil Day is celebrated worldwide on December 5 every year. In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to celebrate World Soil Day on December 5 by a resolution passed at the 68th General Assembly meeting. The purpose of celebrating this day was to make the common people aware about the importance of soil along with the farmers.

In 2002, the International Association of Soil Sciences recommended celebrating World Soil Day every year on December 5. The FAO Conference was unanimously supported to observe World Soil Day in June 2013 and requested its official celebration at the 68th Un General Assembly. The special day was first celebrated all over the world on December 5, 2014. This day is celebrated by the Food and Agriculture Organization.  Fertile soil is becoming barren in many parts of the world. Due to which more chemical fertilizers and pesticides are to be used by the farmers. By doing so, the fertility of the soil is also declining due to reduction in biological properties of the soil and it is becoming a victim of pollution. This day is specially celebrated to sensitize farmers and common people about the safety of soil.

Pm Narendra Modi launched the Soil Health Card Scheme (SHC) in 2015 to improve soil quality.  It had set a target of issuing 140 million Soil Health Cards (SHC) across the country by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Government of India.
