Chennai: Police have filed an FIR against two journalists interviewing Sri Lankan Tamils on the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Both these journalists had written an article interviewing Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka living in India on the issue of CAA and NRC. Both these journalists have a reporter and a photojournalist.

There is no provision for granting citizenship to refugees coming from Sri Lanka under the Citizenship Amendment Act, there is opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act in other cities of Tamil Nadu including Chennai. The protesting people say that there is partiality with Muslims in the Citizenship Amendment Act, on the basis of regional identity in this law.

Many political parties in Tamil Nadu are also demanding a grant of citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamils. This FIR states that "Both journalists entered the refugee camp illegally and attempted to incite the refugees against the CAA." Police have imposed non-bailable sections of IPC against journalists. The sections in which the case has been registered include Section 447, Section 188 and Section 501B.
