Kochi: Saji Cherian, who was a cabinet minister in the Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala, seems to be facing increasing difficulties in insulting the Constitution. A case has been registered against Saji Cherian on Thursday (July 7, 2022). Meanwhile, he has now resigned from the post of minister of the state cabinet.  

On the orders of a local court, in this case, the Keezhwaipur police of Pathanamthitta district has registered an FIR against him under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act. A senior police officer confirmed this. If found guilty in a case of insult to the Constitution, they can be sentenced to a maximum of three years in jail or a fine or both. The special thing is that when this FIR was being lodged against Cherian for insulting the Constitution, he was taking part in the assembly session at that time.

During a programme on a local TV channel, Saji Cherian said that the country's constitution "forgives exploitation" and it has been written to help "loot" the people of the country. His statement was mired in controversy. Following this, an Ernakulam-based lawyer filed a petition in the Thiruvalla Magistrate's Court against the minister for allegedly insulting the Constitution, seeking action against the accused. After this, on Wednesday, the court ordered an FIR to be lodged in the case.
