Montreal: Canada on Thursday appointed its first special representative to combat Islamophobia, following several recent attacks on Muslims in the nation.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, journalist and activist Amira Elghwabi "will serve as a champion, advisor, expert and representative to support and enhance the federal government's efforts in the fight against Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial Will take over." discrimination, and religious intolerance."

Elghawabi, a human rights advocate who spent more than ten years at the public broadcaster CBC, is currently director of communications for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and a columnist for the Toronto Star newspaper.

Elghawabi's appointment was hailed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "an important step forward in our fight against Islamophobia and hatred in all its forms".
Diversity is undoubtedly one of Canada's greatest assets, but many Muslims are all too familiar with Islamophobia, the official continued.

The Muslim community in Canada has been the target of a series of deadly attacks over the past few years. In London, Ontario, a man ran over four members of a Muslim family with his truck in June 2021, killing them.

Four years ago, six Muslims lost their lives and five others were injured in an attack on a mosque in Quebec City. In a series of tweets sent out on Thursday, Elghwabi listed the names of those killed in the recent attacks and concluded, "We must never forget."

A national summit on Islamophobia organized by the federal government in June 2021 in response to the attacks recommended the creation of the new position.
