The first shipment from war-ragged Ukraine carrying 'corn and hope' on its way to Lebanon. The commercial ship to leave Ukraine since February 26 this year reached Turkish territorial waters on Tuesday night before proceeding to its final destination - the Mediterranean port of Tripoli in Lebanon.
In accordance with the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was formally adopted on July 22 in Istanbul by Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey, the dry cargo ship Razoni, flying the flag of Sierra Leone, departed the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odesa on Monday carrying 26,527 metric tonnes of maize.
To secure the vessel's safety as it left Odesa, the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC), which was established in Istanbul under the auspices of the United Nations, asked all of its members to alert their respective militaries and other pertinent authorities of this choice.
The Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC), which is formed by the senior officials from Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and the United Nations, accepted the precise coordinates and limitations of the Safe Humanitarian Maritime Corridor and communicated that information in accordance with international navigational standards.
The Coordination Center is in charge of ensuring that grain, other foodstuffs, and fertilisers are safely transported by merchant ships from three important Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea (Odesa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny) to the rest of the world.
According to the UN, the plan also opens doors for Russian food and fertiliser to enter international markets, all of which are expected to help lower rising food prices globally and prevent the possibility of famine affecting millions of people in the coming months.
