To keep alive the importance of television, the United Nations General Assembly declared the day of November 21 as World Television Day in 1996. Today, television is available in such a thin avatar that we have forgotten its bulky form. Television has undergone a lot of changes in the journey of almost 95 years old. Radio was the era before the invention of television. This was a period in which TV started with a lot of protests. The first television was made in 1924 with the help of boxes, cards and fan motors. Scotland-born John Logie was the inventor of Baird Television. Remote is used to control television which was invented by Eugene Polly. The first TV with remote control came on the market in 1950 and its remote was connected to the TV set via wire. Wireless remote control TV started in 1955.

Television used to be simple in the early stages. In 1954 Westinghouse produced the first color TV set. Initially only 500 units of color TV were made. Color TV was out of the reach of common people for some time due to it being more expensive. The first TV in India was bought by a wealthy Niyogi family from Kolkata. Television in India developed after the establishment of Doordarshan. Doordarshan was established on 15 September 1959. How many channels are not known on TV in today's time, but it is difficult to compete with the popularity that Doordarshan gained in the beginning. Doordarshan was earlier named 'Television India'. In 1975, it has been named Hindi as 'Doordarshan'.
