At least five persons were discovered dead in different locations at a 17th century Shiva Temple on Cachar's Bhuban Hill. The five people were thought to be Lord Shiva devotees who had gone to the temple on the night of Shivratri. The deceased have been named as Anand S Chakraborthy, Sanjay Das, Vikram Paul, N Kurmi, and Anand Ghatowar, according to officials. All of the people that died were Silchar residents.

Initially, it was thought that they died in a stampede caused by heavy footfall in the temple.  The reports were, however, denied by the authorities. V Paul and A Ghatowar, two of the five, died of pressure strokes, according to sources.

The reason of Sanjay Das' death is unclear. Kurmi, on the other hand, died of hyperthermia. On his way to the temple, Chakraborthy was suspected of falling.
