Five people were killed and several others were injured in a bomb blast at a firecracker shop in Sankarapuram town of Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district. Five people injured in the blast were shifted to Government Hospital in Kallakurichi. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed grief on Twitter and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. Financial compensation of Rs 1 lakh will be given to those injured in the fire. Stalin in his tweet said that it was heartbreaking to read that five people died in a fire at a firecracker shop in Shankarapuram in Kallakurichi district.

5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh each for those in intensive care. Fire brigade personnel from Sankarapuram and Kallakurichi were rushed to the spot after a shocking surge in the city. At present the matter is being investigated. The town of Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is known as the hub of firecracker manufacturers in India and its more than 6.5 lakh families are directly and indirectly dependent on this industry for their livelihood.

Once a thriving industry, firecracker manufacturing units in the city are facing economic crisis and uncertainty as several states announce a ban on firecrackers. Sivakasi has been fighting a long battle for the past few years to sell its firecrackers in the country. Despite turning their production towards green crackers, they face uncertainty as several states have imposed a complete ban on the use of firecrackers.
