Johannesburg: In a gas explosion in an unused coal mine in South Africa's eastern province of Mpumalanga, an Five people have been killed and several others remain trapped.

Police spokesperson Brig Leonard Hlathi said four more bodies were recovered in the early hours of Thursday morning. He  said two people were brought to the surface during rescue operations on Wednesday. One died while the other had survived the underground ordeal. He further added, "We don't know how many people are still trapped. The mine rescue team will continue with the operation.”

The mine is owned by Tegeta Resources and Exploration, which is undergoing creditor protection after its owners, the Gupta brothers, found it difficult to continue doing business in South Africa following corruption allegations against them.

Hlati said , Several people had entered the mine on Wednesday afternoon to steal copper wires that supply electricity for lighting and ventilation when a gas pipe exploded.
