Chennai: A tragic incident took place in Tiruvallur on Wednesday in which five people lost their lives while trying to rescue a girl trapped in a pool. Raji's wife Sumathi (35), daughter Ashwita (15), Devendran's daughter Jeevita (14), Gunasekharan's daughter Narmada (12) and Munaswamy's wife Jyothilakshmi (30) from Karumbukuppam village in Kottagummidipoondi went to Ankalaparameswari temple near the village on Wednesday morning to wash clothes.

There Jyothilakshmi and Sumathi Pushkarini are washing clothes on the embankment while Narmada, Ashwita and Jeevita are playing in the pool. Narmada went into a deep area of ​​the pool and sank into the mud. One by one, the other four jumped into the water to rescue the girl. They all got stuck in the mud and all died on the spot. When they did not arrive, the villagers went there and informed the fire brigade and the police that their clothes were lying in a mess on the Pushkarini embankment. Police and firefighters arrived at the scene of the hutahuta and worked for over an hour to retrieve the bodies of the five. Police shifted the bodies to Ponneri Hospital for postmortem. Sipcoat police have registered a case and are investigating.

Tragedy struck the village of Karumbukuppam with the loss of five lives, including three girls from the village. The parents were heartbroken as the children, who had been living happily with them till then, lay lifeless. There was no one else to comfort them. Narmada's family members were moved to tears as they cried out, "Have you gone to the worlds where you will never return, saying that you will become a doctor and support your family?" Ashwita's father burst into tears, saying, "Ankalaparameswari, return my child."
