VIJAYAWADA In a terrible incident in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district, five school students drowned in a rivulet. The bodies of all five students, ages 11 to 14, were discovered by rescue workers on Tuesday. They had been gone since Monday afternoon, when they went swimming in the Munneru rivulet near Eturu to learn how to swim.

Maguluri Sunny (12), Karla Bala Yesu (12), Jetti Ajay Babu (12), Maila Rajesh (11) and Garijala Charan (12) were among the victims (14). They were all Eturu Zilla Parishad High School students. On Monday afternoon, students who were at home due to the Sankranti holidays went to the rivulet. Their parents had gone to work in the fields of agriculture.

Local fisherman told them not to go into the deep seas because there was a risk of drowning, but they disobeyed the warning and ended up in a whirlpool, according to the police. The fisherman attempted but failed to save them. They then notified the police, who requested assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The NDRF crew maintained their search efforts until late Monday night, with the assistance of the police and revenue departments.
