Five people were arrested in the Barpeta region on suspicion of having links to Al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). According to sources, the five were arrested by the Assam Police Special Branch based on particular information.

Md Suman alias Saiful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, Khairul Islam from Kalgachia, Badshah Suleiman Khan from Kalgachia, Noushad Ali from Kalgachia, and Taimur Rahman Khan from Howly were among those arrested.According to reports, one of the five arrested, Saiful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, entered India illegally.

He had been hired as a teacher in this town. The arrested person allegedly encouraged the other four to join a module of the Al Qaeda-inspired Ansarullah Bangla Team, according to the police. The accused individuals reportedly planned to build the Barpeta district as a base for "Jihadis." The accused was also found to have various incriminating papers and devices, according to the police.
