Flood wreaks havoc in southern India, thousands of army personnel engaged in rescue operations

Kochi: Rain continues to wreak havoc in the southern regions. Besides Maharashtra, heavy rain is continuing in Kerala and Karnat. The monsoon rains have created flood situation in many parts of Kerala and Karnataka. Army has been deployed to evacuate and assist those stranded in these areas. Army troops have so far evacuated about 5,000 people from flood-hit areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

In Karnataka, about 1,000 Army personnel have been deployed in Belgaum, Bagalkot, Raichur and Raigad in Maharashtra, Kolhapur and Sangli to rescue and provide relief to the flood affected people. So far 1500 people have been evacuated from flood affected areas of Maharashtra and 3500 from flood affected areas of Karnataka.

In Kerala, Kochi Airport has been closed till 3 pm on 11th August due to heavy rain. The Kerala government has closed all schools in the state on Friday. According to Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, 315 relief camps have been set up in 14 districts for flood affected people in the state. So far 22,165 people have been evacuated to safer places. Relief and rescue operations are going on in Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka.
