The stadium with a capacity of 15000 audiences to be named after former famous footballer and captain of India, Baichung Bhutia, is going to be inaugurated after the outbreak of corona infection. There will also be a system of floodlights in this stadium. This stadium, constructed in Namchi, is 25 km from Bhutia's birthplace in Tinakitam.

The All India Football Federation, quoting Sikkim Football Association Director Menla Ethenpa, said, "It is our honour to be one of the best footballers in the country. Even after retiring, players have become role models for many and have been motivating footballers not only in Sikkim but in the country". He said, "We cannot pay what he has done for Indian football. However, by naming the stadium after him, we are trying to show respect for this great player." It is going to be the first stadium in India to be named after a footballer. Bhutia, the first Indian footballer to complete a century of international matches, said that he is feeling very honored by this.

He further said, "I am very honoured and thrilled. If we look at the big picture, I am happy because the emerging players are going to get another top-level facility and infrastructure to play football. The construction work of Baichung Bhutia Football Stadium started in 2010, but due to financial problems, it has faced many hurdles.
