International Museum Day is celebrated every year on this day i.e. 18th May every year to further increase the awareness about the role of museum in society. The celebration of this day was started by 'The International Council of Museums' (ICOM) in 1977. The purpose of celebrating this day is to increase awareness about the historical fact so that people can be better introduced to the culture of the country and abroad.

International Museum Day has been organized on a large scale every year since 1977, which is a unique day for the museum community. A few years ago, more than 37,000 museums from about 158 ​​countries and regions took part in the event. Whereas in the year 2020, it was not possible to do so due to the lockdown. After 1977, many changes were seen in International Museum Day.

According to the news, many programs were organized to spread awareness and importance of the museum. In 2009, about 20,000 museums from more than 90 countries took part in the celebrations. Some reports suggest that in 2010, 98 countries participated, 100 in 2011 and 30,000 museums from 129 countries in 2012.
