Forest fire continues to ravage Tochigi Pref city

A massive forest fire that broke out four days on the mountain area near the central district of Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture continues to spread. The administration has asked the loals to evacuate the areas. 

The fire broke out on Sunday on Mt Ryogai, which is located 251 metres above sea level could not be doused off despite helicopters dumping water on the fire. Although the fire continues to spread, no casualties or any damage has been reported yet. Taking cognizance of the situation, on Tuesday afternoon, the city administration has already asked 72 households in the area to evacuate.

A hiker infomed about the fire on emergency number 119 at around 03:35 pm on Sunday after spotting the fire in a forested area near the mountain that has a well-known hiking trail.  He informed them that there was a forest fire on the mountain. The mountain is located in the town of Nishinomiya in the city. Although helicopters of the prefectural government and the Ground Self-Defense Force were used, the fire burned down at least 10 hectares of the forest land. In view of the safety of people, the city issued evacuation advisories. Two shelters were set up where 31 people spent the night.
